When a cross-county rivalry game starts off with two runs scored by walks and, by the end of the game, both teams accumulating nearly as many errors (12) as the total runs scored (16), you know you’ve seen an epic game. On Tuesday Michigan City hosted the Slicers, who walked away with a 3-1 win. The Slicers didn’t score their three runs until the 7th inning. On Wednesday it was La Porte’s turn to host the Wolves.
La Porte loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and City’s starting pitcher, Christopher Gault, walked two runs in. Several innings later, both teams committed several errors which led to the game being knotted at 5. In the bottom of the sixth, La Porte’s bats became hot and following a double by Gavin Zolvinski with the bases loaded, the Slicers put the game out of reach.
Slicer Coach Scott Upp, mildly frustrated by the number of errors, commented to WNLP: “It definitely was not a pretty ball game, but nonetheless we were able to find a way to win.”
La Porte is now 16-6 on the season, while Michigan City has 10 wins and 11 losses. The Slicers have four regular-season games left on the schedule before playing South Bend Riley in the sectional at Plymouth.
Editor’s note: Wednesday’s JV game was also one to remember: The Slicers defeated the Wolves 30-3. The Slicers scored 12 runs in the 3rd inning alone.
